The Greens have blocked the pipelines leading from Canada to the USA
On Tuesday the community has experienced the disruption in exports of millions of barrels of crude from Canada to the United States due to the “green” activists. This has become the result of an exceptionally well-organized response of environmentalists-activists, whose aim was the number of pipelines. Immediately in the four US states the activists chained themselves to the equipment on the distant stations after blocking the valves. All activists were arrested by the police.
The protest group Climate Direct Action released a video, in which they expressed their solidarity with the Sioux Indian tribe (Standing Rock reservation), who opposed the construction of an oil pipeline from North Dakota on the Gulf coast of the USA. They were against the construction due to the fact that it could harm the nature of their sacred land and water sources. The pipeline project costs $ 3.7 billion.
The incident has been commented by the officials, pipeline companies and experts. They believe that the activists have sharply increased the risk of the environmental pollution, as due to the pressure drop in the pipeline oil leak can occur. Environmentalists countered that they had been studying the technical documentation for a long time in order to block the pipes without the risk to the environment.
The mentioned above oil pipelines bring to the US about 2.8 million barrels per day. This is the oil that is produced from Canadian oil sands. Jim Carr, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources said: “The interference in the energy infrastructure is a dangerous occupation, which is able to cause harm to citizens and local settlements, which is unacceptable.
The pipeline company Enbridge Inc has sent a message, which says that four of the 67 pipelines in Minnesota have been temporarily disabled but this hasn’t created the supply disruption. Spectra Energy announced that valves at its plant in Montana had been blocked and the pipe had been temporarily stopped. According to reports from the environmentalists, the Keystone pipeline has been also blocked. This pipeline is owned by TransCanada and TransMountain , which are the property of Kinder Morgan.
