Coca-Cola is going to buy a coffeehouse Costa Coffee. The amount of the transaction will be equal to 3.9 billion pounds. The purchase became possible when the owner of the Whitbread chain (a British company owning hotels, cafes and restaurants around the world) brought coffee shops to a separate firm.
The management of Whitbread has already approved the agreement, and its CEO Alison Brittain said that then Costa Coffee would be able to use the global distribution.
Coca-Cola noted that such a deal would allow it not only to obtain a serious trading platform in Europe, but also in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, as well as to increase its influence in these markets.
Presumably, the purchase will be completed during the first half of 2019. Because of this, Coca-Cola has left its financial forecast for this year unchanged.
In 1995, Whitbread paid £ 19 million for Costa’s coffeehouses. Then the company owned 39 outlets. At the moment this is the largest chain in Britain. There are 2400 cafes here. Another 1,400 outlets serve in 31 countries around the world.
According to the statistics of the previous fiscal year, Costa had the revenue of 1.3 billion pounds with pre-tax profits of 238 million.
Coca-Cola is a food company whose history dates back to the end of the 19th century. The company’s most popular product is the same name drink. It is known all over the world. The company’s shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange and are recorded in the Dow Jones and S & P 500 indices.
