Apple has recognized that listening to customers’ conversations with the voice assistant Siri is a violation of their privacy rights. The company has apologized to the customers.
Apple has decided to repent only after an internal audit based on user complaints. Conversations with Siri are recorded and then selectively monitored by company employees. This is done to improve the quality of the assistant. However, during the audit it turned out that other conversations of the clients were recorded too. For example, it is about the talks with doctors, business partners, and sexual partners. Moreover, based on the metadata, it is possible to determine the identities of the participants in the conversations.
Apple has decided to stop working with call recordings. It will be resumed in autumn, but the recordings of real conversations will not be used. The function will be completely disabled, and users will be able to participate in the program to improve the service by choice. Customers who agree to help improve the assistant will get the guaranteed protection of their data and privacy. Recordings currently available will be deleted.
News about wiretapping conversations with Siri appeared last month. Then Apple explained that they had only one goal – to improve the quality of service. The company was sued in California.
Siri Assistant has been used on Apple devices since 2011. It is activated using the phrase “Hello, Siri”. Then the user’s speech is recorded and sent to the company’s server to process the request. After that, the assistant performs the required function or answers the question.
